Mapping Safer Parks: Improving Safety and Inclusion for Women and Girls

As part of the World Urban Parks Symposium 2026, we’re sharing this presentation by Dr Anna Barker of the University of Leeds and Carl McClean of Green Flag Award, exploring how research and mapping tools can help create safer, more inclusive parks.

The presentation connects women’s and girls’ experiences with practical guidance for park design and management. It introduces the free Safer Parks Dashboard, which uses open data and spatial modelling across England and Wales to examine features such as visibility, lighting and routes. It also highlights how community participation and a sense of belonging contribute to park safety.

Whether you couldn’t join us in Istanbul or would like to revisit your notes, this material offers insights into understanding barriers to access and supporting women’s and girls’ confidence in using public spaces.

Explore the presentation and discover how research, community voices and mapping tools can help make parks safer for women and girls.
