The Evolution of Coastal Publicness Through Changing Urban Life

As part of the World Urban Parks Symposium 2026, we’re sharing this presentation by Asst. Prof. Dr. Özgün Arın of Istanbul Okan University, exploring how everyday coastal life shapes public identity and living heritage.

Through three waterfront areas in Istanbul—Kalamış–Fenerbahçe, Maltepe Orhangazi Urban Park and Bostancı—the presentation examines how recreation, maritime transport and shared routines sustain or reshape connections with the sea. It considers how parks and waterfronts carry collective memory through physical transformation, and how newly created public landscapes may become meaningful heritage through repeated community use.

Whether you couldn’t join us in Istanbul or would like to revisit your notes, this material invites reflection on the relationship between public space, everyday practices and cultural continuity.

Explore the presentation and discover how everyday coastal experiences can carry a city’s living legacy into the future.
