In Memory of Alan Smith: Honoring a Legacy in World Urban Parks

At World Urban Parks (WUP), we mourn the loss of Alan Smith, a pivotal figure in the history of the International Federation of Park and Recreation Administration (IFPRA) and a foundational force behind what is now known as World Urban Parks. In this post, we share details about Alan’s online memorial service, along with heartfelt tributes and a cherished photo in his memory. Our deepest condolences go to his family during this challenging time. Rest in peace, Alan Smith.

Alan’s remarkable 30-year tenure as General Secretary and CEO of IFPRA was marked by profound contributions that earned him the prestigious IFPRA Gold Medal and the rare honor of Life Commissioner during the 2013 World Congress in Lake Louise, Canada.

In this Blog, we celebrate Alan’s legacy and reflect on his impactful journey within IFPRA, including his own thoughts on his experiences and broader career.

Alan Smith served as Chief Executive of the Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management (ILAM) beginning in 1984, and he was appointed General Secretary of IFPRA at the World Assembly in Innsbruck that same year, later becoming Chief Executive in 2008. Throughout his tenure, he worked alongside ten presidents and participated in numerous World and European Congresses, forging strong relationships with members globally. He played a pivotal role in establishing a “paying” membership model and transforming the IFPRA Bulletin into IFPRA World, enhancing its production quality. Alan launched the Nations in Bloom initiative in 1996, now the LivCom Awards, which has grown into a leading environmental awards program supported by the United Nations Environment Programme.

Although he was trained as an accountant, his legacy is defined by his dedication to community and environmental stewardship, inspiring future leaders in parks and recreation.
