Parkitecture ft. Maria Zachariades and Luis Romahn
This week on Podparks, we are joined by Maria Zachariades and Luis Romahn to talk about Parkitecture, World Urban Park’s international park design contest.
Maria and Luis share how the contest was created, with the goal to bring innovation and creativity to emerging cities across the world.
As Maria explains, Parkitecture is bringing a community-center approach to design, working with citizens and local organizations from Culiacán, Mexico to analyze neighborhood and environmental needs of public spaces around the city.
Parkitecture is working alongside local partners Parques Alegres, Yobelo and The National Association for Parks and Recreation – Mexico to create an extensive analysis of Culiacán parks and open spaces with an emphasis on ‘healthy green’ quality levels and the voices of park users in Culiacán.
You can find PodParks on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you get your podcasts. Don’t forget to subscribe so you never miss an episode.
Participants from around the world are invited to participate by creating an open design brief for one or more of Culiacán’s Parks, focusing on imaginative design elements that can be operated and maintained by the local community.
Luis discusses the need to include operational considerations when working on the proposal, as this will elevate designs and allow the community to create sustainable relationships with their park management.
Submissions are open to participants from around the world and can be delivered individually or in teams of two or three people, and will be divided into Professional and Student categories. Professional category winners will be awarded up to $50,000 USD cash prize, and Student category winners will receive up to $2,000 USD cash prize.
The deadline for submissions is October 10, 2023; winners will be announced on November 21, 2023.
As Luis and Maria discuss, this first edition of Parkitecture aims to set a precedent for participatory and innovative design processes for parks in emerging cities. The future of Parkitecture is deeply tied to the future of park design, and they can’t wait to see the ideas participants from all around the world bring to the contest.
